Research

I am a Ph.D. student in the Department of Brain & Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester where I work with Robbie Jacobs. Broadly speaking, I am interested in building theoretical/computational models of cognitive and perceptual phenomena. You can check out the papers below to see what I have been working on more specifically.

Papers

Orhan, A. E., & Jacobs, R. A. (to appear) Probabilistic modeling of dependencies among visual short-term memory representations. NIPS 2011. [supplement]

Orhan, A. E., & Jacobs, R. A. (submitted). Dependencies among representations in visual short-term memory: A nonparametric Bayesian account of encoding at multiple levels of abstraction.

Orhan, A. E., & Jacobs, R. A. (2011). A nonparametric Bayesian model of visual short-term memory. In L. Carlson, C. Hölscher, & T. Shipley (Eds.), Proceedings of the 33rd Annual Conference of the Cognitive Science Society. Austin, TX: Cognitive Science Society.

Orhan, A. E., Michel, M. M., & Jacobs, R. A. (2010). Visual learning with reliable and unreliable features. Journal of Vision, 10(2):2, 1-15.

I am currently highlighting the following:

Prizes, not Patents: Joseph Stiglitz on patents (also read this).

Free Software Movement: I support free software (free as in freedom) and so should you!: JabRef, TexMakerX, GNU Emacs, Psychtoolbox, GNU Octave, GNU R.

Open Access Publishing:
Learn about the open access publication movement. Journal of Machine Learning Research, PLoS Computational Biology, PLoS ONE and Journal of Vision are high-quality open access journals that I follow.
