Class 1 (1/19): Organizational Meeting: Assignment due week 2: Read grant writing documents – SF424 instructions, forms and advice documents (listed above). Prepare questions for class.
Class 2 (1/26): Overview: The parts of a grant; The grant review cycle; The review process; Components of an effective grant; Guidelines for mock study section reviews; Outline things needed for proposal; Assignment due Class 3: Written reviews of two grants
Class 3 (2/6): Mock study section (review of sample grants): Assignment due for Class 4: Draft of specific aims (1 page) and significance section (1 – 2 pages). This should clearly articulate the background motivating the specific aims and how successful completion of the aims will advance knowledge, develop new tools for research or clinical work, or improve diagnostic ability or clinical interventions. For most of you, it will involve the former (advancing knowledge).
Class 4 (2/9): Deconstruction of grant proposals: Work groups outline flaws, strengths of two proposals. Work groups flesh out criteria for a successful text, along with common pitfalls.; Assignment for mid-week: Review significant aims and significance sections – send reviews to author.; Assignment for Class 5: Draft of training goals, selection of sponsor sections
Class 5 (2/16): Peer discussion of specific aims and background (with author present): Assignment for mid-week: Review of training goals, selection of sponsor sections – send reviews to author; Assignment for Class 6: Draft of Approach section
Class 6 (2/23): Peer review of training goals, selection of sponsor sections section: Assignment for Class 7: Review of Approach section, draft of activities planned, research experience sections
Class 7 (3/1): Peer discussion of Approach section (with author present): Assignment for mid-week: reviews of activities planned / research experience sections – send to students.; Assignment for Class 8: Penultimate draft of grant text
Class 8 (3/15): Administrative stuff: Assignment for mid-week: Final reviews of research proposals
Class 9 (3/22): Mock study section: Assignment for mid-week: Summary sheets for grant proposals
