Guidelines for BCS Lunch Talks

PROPOSAL: BRAIN AND COGNITIVE SCIENCES LUNCH

Having benefited from "cognitive science lunches" at other universities, we propose establishing a "BCS lunch."

GOAL

To establish a regular (weekly), non-threatening forum for people from BCS and related departments (especially students) to present their work to students, post-docs, and faculty.

BENEFITS

  • Promote cohesion and interaction in the new department.
  • Provide an opportunity for people to become more accomplished speakers.
  • Provide people with experience speaking to a wider audience than they might usually have.

FORMAT

30-to-45 minute talks in a 1-hour time slot (with time for questions and discussion). Refreshments will be provided.

SUITABLE TOPICS

Any research topic, including: works in progress, reviews (of adequately general interest), practice talks for conferences, etc. However, speakers should be mindful of the broad range of backgrounds in the BCS audience, and provide appropriate introductory material when necessary.

SPEAKERS

We would hope to achieve student/faculty/post-doc ratios proportionate to the actual numbers of students, faculty, and post-docs in BCS. There will also be occasional outside speakers.

PROPOSED STARTING DATE

Early in November. We volunteer to organize the series this fall and spring.
