NSC 395: Independent Research
To have independent study courses approved, the following procedure must be adhered to:
- Obtain an Independent Studies form from the Center for Academic Support, 312 Lattimore Hall. Complete the form with the faculty member who is sponsoring your research project. (Your sponsor/supervisor must be a fulltime member of the teaching faculty at the University.)
- Leave the last copy of the form with your sponsor to be used to evaluate your work at the end of the semester. That evaluation will be turned in to the Supervisor of Academic Records.
- Take the completed Independent Studies form to the Office of the University Program in Biology and Medicine, 402F Hutchison Hall, in the Department of Biology. The UPBM Director will review your proposal, approve it, and forward the form to the Center for Academic Support. (Do NOT take the form to Academic Support yourself.) You will be contacted by the UPBM office if any questions arise in the review of your proposal; otherwise you can assume that it has been approved. By special arrangement between the Registrar and Academic Support, you will automatically be registered for the course.
The deadline for approval and registration for an Independent Study course is two weeks after the start of the semester. Begin your planning early! The student and sponsor will determine the title of the project which will then be used as the title of the NSC 395 course. This title must appear on the Independent Studies form. There is a 4-credit hour per semester limit to such courses, and the course cannot be used for Biology Diversification credit in the Neuroscience concentration.
Address questions to Mrs. Doris Kist, UPBM Secretary, x53850; 402F Hutchison Hall.
