Research Opportunities

U

ndergraduates in Neuroscience have many opportunities to participate in research under the direction of faculty members in several disciplines. Research experience is valuable preparation for postgraduate education, medical school, or employment. It can also be the foundation for work done towards a degree with distinction in research. Faculty sponsors of research projects are valuable sources of advice on matters of scientific interest as well as with career and academic concerns.

F

aculty members from several departments at the University of Rochester, on the River Campus and at the Medical Center, conduct research in many aspects of neurosciences. Most are willing to supervise undergraduate projects in their laboratories. To see who the faculty are and to see what areas their research covers, look here. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of Neuroscience at Rochester, a faculty researcher may be listed in more than one area.

S

tudents interested in obtaining research experience should read through the descriptions of participating faculty and identify those individuals whose work is of interest to them. Before approaching a faculty member about supervising a project, students should read several of the recent publications listed with the research descriptions so as to be conversant with the nature of projects in that laboratory and to have some basis for discussion of a student project. Not all of the investigators listed will be able to accommodate every student request made to them, for a number of reasons. Thus, students should have a contingency plan, or wait and approach the researcher at a later date.

N

euroscience majors are eligible for the de Kiewiet Summer Research Fellowships, established to provide opportunities for undergraduates in the Program in Biology and Medicine to gain substantial research experience under the guidance of faculty members in participating departments. These research fellowships consist of a generous stipend and University housing for 10 weeks during the summer. Juniors are especially encouraged to apply. Fellowships are awarded on the basis of academic record, letters of recommendation, and the research proposal written by the student. Application forms are available from both the UPBM office in Biology, 402F Hutchison Hall, and the Undergraduate Neuroscience Program office, 102 Meliora Hall. The deadline for submission of completed applications to the UPBM office is March 15th.
