Visiting the Rochester Baby Lab

Studies in the Baby Lab are conducted by Professor Aslin and his technical staff, as well as by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Once a particular study has been planned, a mailing is sent out to the parents of infants who are within a narrow age-range appropriate for that study. Interested parents call the lab and speak to a member our technical staff. They hear details about the study, and can set up an appointment if they wish to participate. If you've already been in touch with our lab, we'll give you a call (or send you an email, if you'd prefer) when we have a new study for your child. Most studies take approximately 10 minutes, but typically half an hour is allotted to accommodate travel delays and changes in the baby's schedule.

Parking is provided directly adjacent to Meliora Hall and a staff member greets each participant at the door, provides a free parking sticker, and escorts the parents and infant to the lab.

Child care for older siblingsThe Baby Lab is equipped with a variety of toys appropriate for older siblings who may accompany their younger brother or sister during their visit. Child care is provided while one of the parents is occupied with the testing of their infant. One or both parents can be present with their infant at all times during testing. All of the studies involve simple visual displays or sounds, and responses are recorded by a staff member using a computer keyboard or a videotape system. All procedures have been approved by the Human Subjects Review Board at the University's Medical School.
