Family
I’m originally from New Orleans, where I grew up with three of the best siblings anyone could ask for. My sister Megan graduated from LSU last year with a degree in nursing and recently accepted a new nursing job in Florida. My brother Matthew graduated from the Music Industry program at Loyola University and recently moved to Rochester, NY. Our youngest sister, Elena is a diligent student of both English and Hungarian. In her free time, she also studies animal behavior, the physics of Tinkertoys, and, most recently, the art of bow-hunting. She just celebrated her 6th birthday this past fall. We have two great sets of parents, who still live in New Orleans.
Making
When I’m not making baby experiments, I enjoy making other stuff. Recent projects include a new lab logo and website, and also...
First investigations
Before cognitive science, I studied investigative journalism at UC Santa Cruz and USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. I spent a few years during college reporting, writing, and editing (for the AP, OC Weekly, and others). A couple clips from my former life in reporting: Superman Pajamas: How SmartWear Technologies hopes to profit from paranoia, Survival 101: A beginner’s guide to drinking your pee and eating your pets.
Sitting pretty?
If you happen to find yourself with some extra time or money, I encourage you to consider sharing some of your good fortune with one of these especially worthy (and needy!) non-profits: CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) trains community volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in court; School on Wheels provides one-on-one tutoring to homeless children in Los Angeles. A Window Between Worlds helps safe-house and shelter workers set-up and maintain therapeutic art programs for survivors of domestic violence.
Cirque
I love aerial silk and trapeze a lot, and have both rigs set up at home. I also train at Aerial Arts of Rochester, along with several other BCS-affiliated buddies(including Keturah, Tommy, Lauren, Rosa, and Anat). Expect us to premiere Cirque du Cerveau soon! (Not really.)
