BEFORE LiNGUiSTiCS OR COGNiTiVE SCiENCE

I once wrote for the OC Weekly in Orange County, California. I’ve archived a few clips from my former life in reporting: Survival 101: A beginner’s guide to drinking your pee and eating your pets; Porn-secution: The Bush administration has a new weapon in the war on porn; Superman Pajamas: How SmartWear Technologies hopes to profit from paranoia.

MY FAMiLY

My three siblings all still live in New Orleans. In order of seniority, Megan studies nursing at Louisiana State University; Matthew studies Music Industry at Loyola University; and Elena diligently studies English and Hungarian (and will hopefully start using them soon). My parents also live in New Orleans. My mom, Betsy, teaches elementary school and plays folk music. My dad, Glenn, practices environmental law and races dirtbikes. I also have family in California. Mikey is CTO of Vlaze Media in Los Angeles. Brian studies Computer Science at UC Berkeley. And Debbie and Frank work in education and tax preparation respectively nearby in Castro Valley.

(NON-SCiENCE) BOOK RECOMMENDATiONS

I love exchanging book recommendations (so email me yours). Don DeLillo’s The Body Artist is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read; I also loved White Noise. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami is equally dreamlike. Blindness by Jose Saramago was really good, and also The Double. I don’t keep an all-time list, but if I did, Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Lu Xun, Hunter S. Thompson, Allen Ginsberg, and William Faulkner would be on it.
