The effect of video games on visual attention

Useful Field of View (UFOV)

Welcome! Would you like to know how good your spatial vision is? Try this task and see...

You will be shown a display like the one below.

Your task is to say where the target is located.

To give your response, press the number on the keyboard that correponds to the direction along which the target fell.

In our example, it would be 7. Summarized below is the mapping between the key on your keypad and the possible locations where the target may be.

Watch, this short shockwave movie to get a feel for how a real trial is going to go.

First, there will be a fixation box. Try to keep your eyes centered within this box.

Next, the target will be briefly flashed, followed by a mask (that's the "noise/static" screen you see).

The target was up and to the right, so you would press the number 9 on your keypad.

Now that you understand the task, click here to begin the experiment: Begin Experiment 2

If you need to look at these instructions while the experiment is in progress, you must minimize the experiment window. Once you're finished with the instructions, maximize the experiment window, click on the active movie to unpause it, and then continue.
