Research Overview

I currently use neuroimaging techniques to explore mechanisms involved in the computation of transitional probabilities during statistical learning. The goal is to answer questions such as, is there a localized neural mechanism for computing transitional probabilities between units in language? If so, is the mechanism specific to this domain or utilized for a wider range of learning tasks? A second line of my research with Dr. Newport examines learning abilities in people suffering from acquired comprehension disorders. While it is clear that people with aphasia cannot always process their original language effectively, we do not yet know the extent to which they could learn anew. To gain insight into the plasticity of language function in the damaged adult brain, we are now developing an /artificial/ grammar learning paradigm.
